Kim Jong-un's sister criticized the exercises of the United States and South Korea
The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, opposed the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States and threatened them with a "super-powerful" response. Her statement was published on March 10 by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
"Since March 9, the opposing states, as a sign of another intense expression of their innate antipathy towards us and habitual hostile policies, have launched large-scale joint military exercises. <...> Opponents should not try to test our patience, will and ability," KCNA quoted her as saying.
Kim Yo Jong expressed the opinion that in a difficult international situation, there is no difference between "defense and offensive, exercises and practical war," therefore, it is necessary to respond to such actions with a preventive and suppressive offensive. She noted that the DPRK will monitor the enemy's further steps.
The Reuters news agency reported on February 25 that the United States and South Korea will hold joint large-scale military exercises called "Freedom Shield" from March 9 to March 19. It was noted that deterrence scenarios related to the DPRK's nuclear weapons would be worked out during the exercises. The authors of the article note that the South Korean leader is striving to normalize relations with the DPRK and for this purpose offered the Americans to reduce the scale of the field part of the exercises, but this proposal was rejected in Washington.
