The expert named the fat accumulation zones in women after menopause
Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to a redistribution of adipose tissue and the appearance of so—called fat traps in the abdomen, thighs and upper back. On March 8, Georges Alhamati, a plastic surgeon and mammologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about the causes of such changes and possible correction methods.
As the doctor noted, menopause is a natural stage in a woman's life, which is accompanied by hormonal changes and can affect the figure. During this period, estrogen levels decrease, metabolism slows down, and muscle mass decreases. As a result, the body begins to distribute adipose tissue differently, and the usual diet and lifestyle no longer always help to maintain weight.
According to Alhamati, after menopause, fat deposits are more likely to move to the abdomen and waist, although previously they could concentrate mainly on the hips. Even small changes in diet can lead to faster weight gain. One of the most common problems is the accumulation of fat in the abdominal area.
"Fat can be subcutaneous (forming folds and an "apron") and internal — around organs. Excess fat in the abdominal area not only affects the appearance, but also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes," the doctor said.
The hip area also remains prone to the accumulation of dense adipose tissue. The so-called breeches are often difficult to correct with the help of diets and physical exercises. Another problem area, according to the expert, may be the "withers" — a fatty deposit in the upper back and neck, which is sometimes called a widow's hump.
"It can occur due to hormonal changes, decreased muscle tone and impaired posture. Sometimes it is accompanied by a feeling of heaviness and pain in the neck," the expert noted.
In some cases, an integrated approach helps to improve the situation. The specialist recommends a diet with sufficient protein, regular strength training to maintain muscle mass, hormonal monitoring and consultation with an endocrinologist if necessary. However, if a pronounced excess of skin and adipose tissue has formed in the abdominal area, only a lifestyle change may not give the desired result.
In such cases, abdominoplasty, a surgical operation to remove excess skin and adipose tissue in the abdominal area, may be considered, the surgeon added. During the procedure, it is also possible to strengthen the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall if the patient has a discrepancy, known as diastasis. At the same time, it is important to understand that abdominoplasty is not intended for weight loss, but is aimed at improving the shape of the abdomen and eliminating the skin "apron".
Other methods, including liposuction, can be used to correct other areas, such as the hips or withers. The choice of the correction method always depends on the state of health, the volume of tissues and the individual expectations of the patient, concluded Alhamati.
On January 28, Gunai Salayeva, a reproductive therapist, obstetrician-gynecologist, and gynecologist-endocrinologist, called habits dangerous for women's health. Smoking accelerates the depletion of the ovarian reserve, leads to early menopause, damages eggs and reduces the likelihood of conception. In addition, women who smoke have increased risks of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, placental abruption, premature birth, and low birth weight.
