The expert explained the factors influencing the increase in the cost of flowers
The increase in the cost of flowers in 2026 is due to the dependence of the Russian market on imports, currency fluctuations, holiday demand and logistics overload. Ilya Rusyaev, a business consultant and founder of the Rusyaev Club business community, told Izvestia about this on February 27.
According to the expert, the price increase is due to several factors. Currently, the Russian cut flower market is 78% dependent on imports, and the main suppliers are currently Ecuador, the Netherlands, Colombia and Kenya. The expert explained that the cost of flowers is influenced by the currency: fluctuations in the ruble against the dollar and the euro quickly affect the purchase price.
Another important factor is the run-up to the holidays and logistics overload. In February 2026, the volume of customs clearance of floral products increased by 75%, and from February 1 to February 25, 8.8 thousand tons of flowers were imported. Seasonality also plays a role in pricing. For example, closer to March 8, tulips, lisianthus and gypsophila appear on the shelves of networks, which changes the average customer's receipt.
"Seasonality accelerates, first of all, not the minimum entry price, but the average consumer scenario. 15 tulips at the end of February cost about 3.6 thousand rubles, 15 roses about 4.5 thousand rubles, and the average bouquet without additions to the festive demand costs about 3.9 thousand rubles," Rusyaev said.
He stressed that the gap between purchase and retail prices in the networks is also noticeable. The average price of a rose after customs clearance is about 42 rubles per piece, while in stores the price starts from 185 rubles. This difference includes not only the result of the intermediaries' work, but also the costs of international logistics, storage, packaging and trade margins.
"As a result, the 7% increase in the minimum price is the result of a combination of import dependence, currency sensitivity, pre—holiday logistics overload and a long chain of bringing goods to the shelf. Mass retail is still holding the situation better than specialized retail due to standardization and a low entry threshold, whereas in the gift segment the check is already going to 3.6–4.5 thousand rubles for popular items," concluded Rusyaev.
Analysts at Lemana PRO reported on February 11 that in 2025, the network's customers purchased over 4 million indoor plants. 58% of sales are for decorative flowering plants, 30% for decorative deciduous plants, and 12% for succulents. According to their estimates, last year Russians became more interested in ornamental and deciduous plants. Compared to 2024, the demand for them increased by 18% and accounted for 30% of indoor plant sales.
