- The WSJ learned about the US search for new ways to impose duties after the decision of the Supreme Court
The administration of US President Donald Trump is looking for new ways to impose tariffs after the US Supreme Court blocked most of the previously imposed duties by its decision. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Monday, February 23, citing sources.
"The Trump administration is considering the possibility of imposing new national security tariffs on half a dozen industries. <...> They (duties. — Ed.) will be issued in accordance with section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which gives the president broad authority to impose tariffs based on threats to national security," the material says.
It clarifies that potential new tariffs may apply to large-scale batteries, cast iron and iron fittings, plastic pipes, industrial chemicals, as well as equipment for power grids and telecommunications. Similar measures can also be taken with respect to semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), industrial robots, and polysilicon, which is used in solar panels.
The interlocutors of the publication noted that the office of the American leader is currently also reviewing existing duties. In particular, they are working on those that have been introduced for steel and aluminum.
The US Armed Forces decided against Trump's import duties on February 21. Representatives of the instance clarified that the head of the White House had no authority to impose either a number of economic or other tariffs aimed at combating declared emergencies. At the same time, it became known that the United States could be required to return more than $175 billion collected from emergency customs duties.
On the same day, Trump signed a law on global duties of 10%, which extended to all states. After a while, he announced that he had increased these tariffs from 10% to 15%. Two days later, the American president announced a tough policy through licenses and duties and talked about the possibility of doing "terrible things" with other states.
