Forgiveness Sunday completes the Carnival week and becomes an important stage in preparation for Lent. On this day, believers strive to reconcile with their neighbors, ask for forgiveness and purify their hearts from offenses. Prayer is of particular importance — it is through it that a person turns to God asking for mercy and the power to forgive everyone. For more information about which prayers to read on Forgiveness Sunday, see the Izvestia article.

Why is it especially important to pray on Forgiveness Sunday?

Forgiven Sunday is not only a day of mutual reconciliation, but also a time of deep inner concentration. The Church recalls the words of the Gospel: if a person forgives others, the Lord forgives him. Therefore, prayer on this day becomes a continuation of the words "Forgive me."

Believers turn to God with a request to grant them the ability to let go of their grievances and begin Lent with a pure soul. In the evening, a special service with the rite of forgiveness is held in the churches, during which the clergy and parishioners ask each other for forgiveness. However, prayer to God is also possible at home — the main thing is that the words are spoken sincerely.

The main prayer of the day is "Our Father"

One of the most important prayers on Forgiven Sunday is the prayer "Our Father." It contains a direct request for forgiveness: "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." These words remind us that personal forgiveness is linked to the grace of God.

In the Russian translation, the prayer sounds like this:

"Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen to that."

This prayer can be read in the morning and evening, as well as before asking for forgiveness from loved ones.

Prayers for the forgiveness of sins

One of the ancient penitential prayers is an appeal to Christ with a request for the renewal of the soul and the gift of true repentance. In the Russian translation, the text of the prayer looks like this:

"Lord Christ, God, Who healed my passions with His sufferings and healed my sores with His wounds, grant me, a sinner of many sins, tears of tenderness. Unite my body with Your life-giving Body and nourish my soul with Your Honest Blood in order to heal me from the bitterness that the enemy has given me. Lift up my mind to You, who have fallen down, and raise me from the abyss of destruction, for there is no true repentance and contrition in me. I am darkened by the passions of life and cannot look at You with love. But You, Lord Jesus Christ, are a treasure of goodness, grant me complete repentance and a hardworking heart in search of You, renew Your image in me. I have forsaken You, do not forsake me; go out in search of me, lead me into Your pasture and count me among the sheep of Your chosen flock, nourish me from Your Mysteries through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother and all the saints. Amen to that."

Also on Forgiveness Sunday, the prayer of St. John Chrysostom is read as a confession of faith and a petition for mercy. Translated into Russian, it sounds like this:

"I believe, Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is Your most Pure Body and this is Your most Honest Blood. I beseech You: have mercy on me and forgive my sins — voluntary and involuntary, in word, deed, knowledge and ignorance—and make me worthy to partake of Your Most Pure Mysteries without condemnation for the remission of sins and eternal life. Amen to that."

These prayers help a person not only to ask for forgiveness, but also to realize the depth of their responsibility to God and their neighbors. They are read at home or in church — in silence, with attention and inner concentration.

How to read prayers correctly on the Forgiven Sunday

The Church does not set strict rules on which prayers should be read on this day. The main thing is the internal location of the heart. You can limit yourself to the prayer "Our Father", or you can supplement it with petitions for the forgiveness of others and your own sins.

The clergy advise to concentrate before prayer, turn off external stimuli and, if possible, light a candle or lamp. It is important to remember that the meaning of the day is not limited to the formal utterance of words. Forgiveness Sunday is a step towards reconciliation and the beginning of a spiritual journey lasting 40 days of Great Lent.

Prayer on this day becomes not only a request for forgiveness, but also a promise to change oneself. And it is with this attitude that the path to Easter begins.
