At the end of Maslenitsa week, Orthodox believers celebrate Forgiveness Sunday, a period of reconciliation and preparation for Lent. On this day, it is customary to ask each other for forgiveness for insults in order to enter the fast with pure thoughts and a calm heart. When is Forgiven Sunday celebrated in 2026, why is it called Cheese Week and what traditions are associated with it — in the Izvestia article.

Forgiven Sunday – 2026: what date is celebrated?

Forgiven Sunday belongs to the passing days of the church calendar, so its date changes every year. It depends on Easter, since the entire structure of the preparatory weeks and Lent itself is built around the Easter cycle. Forgiveness Sunday falls on the last Sunday before Lent and actually completes the preparation for it.

In 2026, Forgiveness Sunday is celebrated on February 22. The next day, February 23, 2026, Great Lent begins. The date can also be checked "mathematically": to do this, 49 days must be counted back from Easter, which this year falls on April 12 (six weeks of fasting and the Forgiven Sunday itself).

The ecclesiastical meaning of the name of the holiday

In the church tradition, Forgiveness Sunday has several names. In the liturgical books, it is called the Cheese Week, or Cheese Week. The word "cheese" here means dairy food, and "letting go" means abandonment, cessation of consumption. This reflects the order of preparation for the fast: by this time, meat is no longer consumed, but dairy products and eggs are still allowed. Such a gradual transition is necessary to gently prepare a person for a stricter period of restrictions.

Another name is the Week of Remembrance of Adam's Exile, or Adam's Exile. On this day, during the services, the biblical story of how man lost paradise due to the fall is remembered. Therefore, fasting is perceived as a way of returning to inner composure, humility and correction of life.

Why this day is called the Forgiven Day: the meaning of reconciliation before Lent

The name of the day is associated with the practice of mutual forgiveness. In Orthodoxy, it is believed that it is impossible to sincerely ask God for forgiveness if a person does not try to reconcile with those whom he has offended and is not ready to let go of resentments against others.

Forgiven Sunday is perceived as a day when it is important to check yourself.: is there any anger, resentment or other negative feelings towards others? Getting rid of these emotions and feelings is an important part of preparing for fasting.

Lent is a time when a person consciously restricts himself not only in food, but also in habits, emotions, conversations, trying to be more attentive to prayer and actions. To begin this period, continuing to argue, take revenge or do evil to others, means to enter into a fast without the main thing — inner peace and the desire to change.

The Story of the Forgiven Sunday

The tradition of Forgiveness Sunday is associated with early Christianity and monastic practice. According to church tradition, Egyptian monks went into the desert for forty days of solitude and prayer before the beginning of Great Lent. The path was dangerous, and many realized that they might not return.

Before leaving, they gathered for worship and asked each other for forgiveness for possible offenses. This gesture had a deep spiritual meaning: to enter into a fast with a pure heart and peace of mind. Over time, this custom has become an integral part of the preparation for Lent.

How is the service on Forgiveness Sunday?

Of particular importance on this day is the evening service with the rite of forgiveness, which combines elements of Sunday Vespers and the first day of Great Lent. The clergy change their light-colored vestments to dark ones, which symbolizes the entry into the lenten period.

At the end of the service, the priest addresses the parishioners with a request for forgiveness. Then the believers approach each other, say words of reconciliation and bow. This rite emphasizes that spiritual life is impossible without consent with others.

What words should I say on Forgiveness Sunday?

In Russian church usage, a short and understandable formula has been fixed for what to say and answer on a Forgiven Sunday. A person addresses another person with the words: "Forgive me," and in response he hears: "God will forgive, and I forgive." This phrase emphasizes that the final judgment and fullness of forgiveness belong to God, and man, for his part, refuses to hold evil and take revenge.

Forgiveness presupposes sincerity. It is not limited to the formal utterance of words, but requires an inner intention to restore peace in the relationship. In the folk tradition, after the exchange of words of reconciliation, a triple kiss was accepted, which is why the day was sometimes called a Kisser.

Folk traditions and customs of the Forgiven Sunday

In Russia, the Forgiven Sunday ended the Carnival festivities. On this day, a farewell to winter was arranged: an effigy of Maslenitsa was burned in the squares as a symbol of farewell to the cold. People believed that old grudges and troubles go away with fire.

It was believed that the house should be cleaned by this day, and the dishes should be washed. The housewives tried not to leave uneaten food, and gave the leftovers to the animals. This was perceived as a sign of readiness for a new stage.

Pancakes were the main treat of the celebration. They symbolized the sun and the coming spring. Another common tradition was going to the sauna: people believed that thorough cleansing of the body helps prepare it for fasting.

Forgiveness Sunday unites church and everyday traditions. But there is always one thing at the center of the day — the desire to forgive and be forgiven in order to enter Lent calmly and without a burden on the soul.
