This day has several church names. In the liturgical tradition, it is called the Cheese Week or Cheese Week. By this point, believers have completely given up meat, but they can eat dairy products and eggs. This day is also called the remembrance of Adam's exile from paradise. During the service, the biblical story of the fall of man is recalled, and the fast itself is perceived as a way to return to spiritual harmony.

Why is it important to reconcile on Forgiveness Sunday?

The main tradition of the day is to ask for forgiveness from family, friends and anyone who a person might have offended. In the Orthodox environment, it is customary to say, "Forgive me," and respond: "God will forgive, and I forgive." These words symbolize the desire of believers to begin a new spiritual stage without evil and heaviness on the soul.

The custom of asking for forgiveness dates back to the early Christian era. According to legend, Egyptian monks went into the desert before Lent to spend 40 days in prayer and solitude following the example of Christ. Realizing that not everyone would be able to return, they asked each other for forgiveness for all their voluntary and involuntary offenses, thus clearing their conscience. Over time, this tradition spread among all believers.

In the folk tradition, Forgiveness Sunday was also given special importance. The ancestors believed that if a person sincerely forgave the offender, then his own soul would be freed from heaviness, and a new bright period would begin in life. Refusal to forgive was perceived as a sign of inner closeness and stubbornness, which, according to beliefs, could bring discord into the house.

A sunny and clear day promised a warm spring and a favorable autumn. It was believed that with the bright sun on the day of the celebration, you can expect a good harvest and a calm summer. If the sky is overcast, it is snowing or raining, then spring promised to be long and cool.

The appearance of icicles on the roofs was considered a good sign — their abundance was associated with a rich harvest. If by this time grass was beginning to grow out from under the snow, the year promised to be fertile.

We also watched the birds on Forgiveness Sunday. The loud singing of birds was perceived as a harbinger of good news, and the arrival of rooks as a sign of the imminent snowfall. If the birds fell silent and the sky quickly clouded over, it was considered a warning of a difficult agricultural season.

Omens about family and prosperity on Forgiven Sunday

Forgiveness Sunday coincides with the end of Maslenitsa, so on this day it was customary for the whole family to gather for a meal. It was believed that lunch or dinner shared with loved ones strengthens family ties and brings harmony to the house. In the old days, in villages, a sheep's skin was placed on top of the table with the fur facing out — as a symbol of warmth and abundance.

Great importance was attached to pancakes, the main treat of Maslenitsa. They tried to eat all the pancakes baked on the holiday, because they believed that this way they could attract happiness into the life of each family member. If someone came across a hunk of bread at dinner, it was considered a sign of imminent monetary success.

Signs about health and inner condition

In popular culture, Forgiveness Sunday was perceived not only as spiritual, but also as a bodily cleansing. Going to the sauna on this day was considered a good sign. People believed that this way diseases and sins were washed away before fasting.

There was a belief that if you went to bed before midnight on a holiday, it would be easier to wake up all year round. At the same time, the clergy emphasize that the main "sign" of this day is the state of the heart. If a person is able to sincerely forgive and ask for forgiveness himself, his spiritual life becomes more complete. In the church's understanding, no superstition can replace prayer and inner work on oneself.
