The periodontist named contraindications for thickening the gums with a laser
The method of gum thickening using a laser proposed by Russian scientists is contraindicated for patients with diabetes, severe cardiovascular diseases, cancer, pregnancy and lactation. Alex Bit-Alex, a periodontist at the Dentistoff Scientific Dentistry, told Izvestia about this on February 18.
As the expert explained, the fractional laser forms many microzones on the surface of tissues, surrounded by intact areas. Unlike a solid beam, it creates pinpoint micro-damages that become a "trigger" for regeneration.
"Unlike an ablative or diode laser, which uses a continuous beam over the entire surface of the tissue, a fractional laser creates many small lesions surrounded by healthy areas. These microzones serve as "starting points" for the natural recovery process: the tissues around them are stimulated to more active growth and regeneration," he said.
As noted by the periodontist, the method requires a preliminary diagnosis, as it has a number of contraindications. Common ones include: diabetes mellitus, severe cardiovascular diseases, blood clotting disorders, active autoimmune processes, oncology, photosensitive diseases, pregnancy and lactation, as well as taking medications that increase sensitivity to light. Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of therapy due to the deterioration of microcirculation.
Local limitations include gingivitis and periodontitis in the active phase, poor oral hygiene, severe bone loss, bruxism, crowding of teeth, and acute infections.
In addition, as Bit-Alex noted, the new gum thickening method is not yet able to completely replace traditional surgical methods, but it can reduce the need for them.
"This technology works especially well in combination with other methods (for example, I-PRF and injections of hyaluronic acid). It can also be used to improve blood flow before surgery or to accelerate healing after a tissue transplant," the expert said.
In addition, the specialist noted that the research by Russian scientists opens up new opportunities in periodontics, but the technology is still considered as an additional tool, rather than a universal alternative to surgery. Effectiveness largely depends on the initial characteristics of the patient, hygiene and professionalism of the doctor, he concluded.
On February 9, Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, spoke about the habits that lead to the destruction of tooth enamel. According to the expert, one of the unobvious provocateurs of enamel destruction is the habit of washing down hot food with cold drinks, as temperature fluctuations increase sensitivity and can provoke microcracks on the enamel. Another reason is acidic foods and drinks: water with lemon in the morning, citrus smoothies, sugar—free sodas, the dentist added.
