There is growing concern in the United States that the time for agreeing to extend the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty) with Russia is coming to an end. This was announced on February 3 by Kirill Dmitriev, Special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation, on the social network X.

"Time is running out for the United States to agree to extend the START Treaty, the last nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia," he wrote.

According to Dmitriev, even former US President Barack Obama, whom he called "brave," is worried about this.

Earlier, on September 22, 2025, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Russia's readiness to comply with quantitative restrictions on the START Treaty for another year, subject to a similar step by the United States.

The office of the UN Secretary-General warned that in the absence of agreements, for the first time in more than 50 years, the world could be left without mandatory restrictions on the strategic nuclear arsenals of Russia and the United States. At the same time, it was noted that the risk of using nuclear weapons is now the highest in recent decades.
