- In the United States, more than 1 million homes were left without electricity amid a blizzard
The number of homes in the United States left without electricity amid a snowstorm has exceeded 1 million. This was confirmed on January 25 by data from the Poweroutage outage monitoring service.
The total number of outages exceeded 1 million 60 thousand: the states of Tennessee (338 thousand), Mississippi (174 thousand), Louisiana (146 thousand) and Texas (91 thousand) accounted for the most.
Earlier, on January 24, the American authorities warned of heavy snowfalls and a sharp drop in temperature. US President Donald Trump said that emergency services have been put on high alert.
On the same day, 14 US states and the District of Columbia declared a state of emergency due to the impending extreme cold and heavy snowfall. It is noted that an emergency has been declared in a wide area from Texas to New York State due to a powerful storm that is expected to hit the country over the weekend. In some areas, a sharp drop in temperature is predicted well below zero, which can trigger rare natural phenomena, including the destruction of trees due to severe frosts.
Prior to that, on January 22, it was noted that more than 235 million people in more than 40 US states — from Arizona to Maine — are on the path of a large-scale winter storm, which is expected to cover over 2,000 miles.
