- The European Parliament announced the suspension of the trade agreement between the EU and the United States.
The European Parliament has officially decided to suspend the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the United States. This was announced on January 21 by Bernd Lange, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on International Trade.
"We have no choice but to suspend work on a trade agreement until the United States decides to resume cooperation rather than engage in confrontation," Bloomberg quoted him as saying.
Lange noted that it is impossible to continue working in the "usual mode" and stressed that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the EU are at stake. He also added that the actions and statements by US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland undermine trust between the allies and cast doubt on the stability of trade relations between the EU and the United States.
On December 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10%, with the possibility of increasing to 25%, on a number of European countries in connection with the situation around Greenland. It was noted that starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
The head of the European People's Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, in turn, announced on January 18 that the European Parliament was suspending the ratification of the trade agreement between the EU and the United States due to threats from the American leader. Weber also clarified that the head of the White House "lost a lot" last night.
