FT learned about the US proposal to expand Trump's "Peace Council" to Ukraine
The Peace Council project led by US President Donald Trump, which is being developed by Washington to monitor the territory of the Gaza Strip, is proposed to be expanded to include Ukraine and Venezuela. This was reported on January 16 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
U.S. officials have floated the idea of expanding the Donald Trump—led "Peace Council" in Gaza to include other hot spots such as Ukraine and Venezuela. <...> The Trump administration views the Peace Council "as a potential replacement for the United Nations," the article says.
It is noted that the relevant initiative can be presented to the world community within the framework of the World Economic Forum (WEF), which will be held next week at the Swiss resort of Davos.
One of the unnamed Arab diplomats told the newspaper that the news about the potential project raises concerns in the Middle East, as their representatives consider this procedure "unusual."
On January 14, the Axios portal learned about the mailing of invitations from the United States to join the "Peace Council" on Gaza. It was noted at the time that the first meeting within the council could take place as early as next week at the WEF in Davos. FT reported on January 13 that as part of this event, Kiev's G7 allies intend to discuss guarantees for Ukraine with Trump at the Davos forum. Among the initiators of the discussions, as specified, were the Prime Ministers of Great Britain, Italy and Canada, Keir Starmer, Giorgia Meloni and Mark Carney, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.
