- The German Foreign Minister expressed doubt about the readiness of the United States to attack Greenland.
On January 12, German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl expressed doubt about the readiness of the United States for active military action against Greenland.
"I have no reason to believe that this (military action — Ed.) is being seriously considered, but I believe that we (Germany and the United States. There is a common interest in dealing with security issues in the Arctic," the foreign minister told reporters after a meeting in the United States with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Vadefoul clarified that the development of a plan to ensure security in the Arctic in the interests of NATO has just begun. He also expressed confidence that results would be achieved during the upcoming negotiations between the United States and Denmark.
On January 4, the head of the White House said that it would be beneficial for the European Union from the point of view of defense if the United States owned the island. On the same day, Greenland's prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen indicated that he considered Washington's "repetitive rhetoric" disrespectful and unacceptable. At the same time, on January 9, the American leader noted that NATO would not exist if he were not president.
European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said on January 12 that the US military operation to capture Greenland, if launched, would mean the end for the North Atlantic Alliance.
The press service of Republican Congressman from the United States Randy Fine reported on January 12 that a bill "on the annexation and statehood of Greenland" had been introduced. It was clarified that the law on the annexation and status of Greenland as a state empowers US President Donald Trump to take all necessary actions to annex or acquire Greenland as a US territory.
