U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente. This was announced on January 12 by the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

"Following the instructions of [Mexican] President Claudia Sheinbaum, today Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente held a telephone conversation with Secretary of State Marco Rubio," the department wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The goals were to discuss the need for closer cooperation to disrupt "violent drug trafficking networks and end the trade in fentanyl and weapons," according to a statement from a State Department spokeswoman.

Earlier, on January 9, American leader Donald Trump announced that the United States would launch land strikes against cartels in Mexico. According to him, representatives of drug cartels run the United Mexican States, and he is "sad to watch" what is happening in this state.
