An auto expert warned about the dangers of driving on summer tires in the snow
Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of car service Fit Service, told on Thursday, November 13, how to act for a motorist if he did not have time to change summer tires for winter tires in advance.
"If snow suddenly fell, and the owner did not have time to "change shoes" the car, it is better not to use the car at all. According to statistics, the first wave of accidents with the onset of frost is almost always associated with summer tires. During this period, drivers overestimate the capabilities of their cars and electronic assistants," he said in an interview with the Auto Mail project.
He recommended taking a taxi, carsharing, and public transport for several days until it is possible to change tires.
According to Rodionov, the first cold snap usually lasts no more than a week. The temperature stabilizes above zero, and then the road to the service station becomes safe, and the flow in the tire shops decreases.
The expert noted that if it is necessary to drive on summer tires on a winter road, you should avoid heavy traffic, choose the right lane, and avoid difficult interchanges and rings. He advised accelerating as smoothly as possible while driving and using engine braking, rather than pressing the brakes sharply. In addition, the distance to the cars in front should be increased at least twice.
"It should be remembered that modern electronic safety systems such as ABS and ESP will not help if there is not enough grip between the wheels and the road," Rodionov concluded.
Earlier in the day, the Traffic Police recommended changing summer tires to winter tires, as frosts are possible over the coming weekend. Tires in size or permissible load must match the vehicle model, the traffic police emphasized.
The day before, the press service of the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development recommended that Moscow motorists travel only on winter tires this weekend due to sleet and ice, the Moscow City News agency reports.
According to forecasters, wet snow and rain are expected in the city on November 15, strong winds of up to 15 m/s and a drop in temperature to -5 degrees, writes Moscow 24. Icy conditions are also possible, RIAMO clarifies.
Prior to that, on November 10, auto expert Vladimir Bakharev warned that the car could become uncontrollable during a change in the weather and the first snowfall if special driving regulations were not followed.
In turn, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, said that Muscovites will have a small snow cover from November 16 to 18, reports NSN.
