US senators have called on Hungary to abandon purchases of Russian energy resources ahead of a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and US President Donald Trump. This was reported by Bloomberg on November 6.

The congressmen expressed concern that Hungary, in their opinion, had not shown "any signs of reducing its dependence on Russian fossil fuels," after which they called on Orban to join the European Union's (EU) proposal to stop imports by 2027, the newspaper said.

It is noted that the resolution was signed by 10 senators of both American parties at once — Republicans and Democrats.

On October 22, the US Treasury Department announced that the United States was imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. It was clarified that these companies are included in the sanctions list for activities in the Russian energy sector.

In addition, on October 20, the EU approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. It was also decided to ban the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. The measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.

On October 24, Orban announced that Hungary was looking for ways to circumvent the European Union's initiative to ban oil and gas imports from Russia. As Svetlana Zhurova, deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs committee, stated on October 24, the Hungarian Prime Minister speaks honestly about the interests of his country and people, without doing anything on the sly. This makes him sympathetic to the population of his country.
