A new trend in the labor market is forming in Russia: the demand for specialists in 3D printing and the Internet of Things (IoT), various devices with online sensors, has sharply increased, Izvestia found out. In some regions, interest in designers in these areas increased by 11-41%. Experts attribute this trend to import substitution, digitalization of industry and the growth of domestic technological production, which has increased the need for engineers and developers. What other professions are in demand now can be found in the Izvestia article.

Which specialists are in demand in the labor market

A new technological trend in the labor market is taking shape in Russia: employers are increasingly interested in specialists working at the intersection of digital technologies, production and the virtual environment. The demand for experts in the field of 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as designers of virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) has increased especially noticeably, the director told Izvestia. hh.ru according to the research of Maria Ignatova.

The direction related to 3D printing is rapidly gaining momentum. The profession of an additive technology designer no longer looks like a niche one: such specialists create digital models and control high—precision equipment for printing a wide variety of objects, from interior items and medical prostheses to building elements and industrial parts, she noted.

— Since the beginning of the year, about 1,000 vacancies in this field have been published in Russia. Moscow (41% of all offers) and St. Petersburg (15%) form the main demand, while the Sverdlovsk Region (11%) occupies the third position, where the industrial and technological sector is actively developing," said Maria Ignatova.

She also noted the interest in personnel working in the field of the Internet of Things. IoT engineers and developers are creating ecosystems of smart devices capable of exchanging data and interacting autonomously, whether it's industrial complexes, security systems, smart home devices, or infrastructure solutions for cities.

Since the beginning of the year, about 400 vacancies have appeared on the market, and most of the specialists are needed in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which account for about half of all requests. Significant demand is also noted in the Novosibirsk region and Vladivostok, where centers of attraction for high-tech projects are actively being formed, the specialist emphasized.

Izvestia sent a request to large companies (Yandex, MTS, Avito and others) with a request to comment on the situation on the labor market.

The Positive Technologies press service told Izvestia that the growing number of IoT devices increases threats to both users and businesses. The company's experts had previously predicted an increase in attacks on the Internet of Things, and today this is confirmed: vulnerable devices and protocols are becoming constant targets of cybercriminals. Security is particularly critical in industrial IoT and developing smart city systems, including digitalization of apartment buildings.

Against the background of such risks, the profession of an IoT security specialist is becoming particularly in demand — it is these experts who are able to protect both individual apartments and large-scale urban and industrial technology systems, the company noted.

Izvestia talked to one of the 3D designers. Mikhail Larkin has been in this profession since 2019, working for himself. He said that the main responsibility is to monitor the technical condition of the 3D printer as a full—fledged machine. It is necessary to carry out maintenance in advance: lubricate mechanisms, check bearings and consumables.

According to him, taking care of a 3D printer can be compared to taking care of a car: with regular maintenance, the equipment works properly, and if ignored, problems arise. He stressed that it is important to use high—quality plastic - printing with cheap materials leads to low-quality products, as if inexpensive parts were put in a car.

"The printer needs to be 'explained' exactly how to print the part: if there are errors in the settings, the quality will be low, and in some cases the equipment may even be damaged," he said.

Speaking about the profession, he noted that it is relevant, but the competition is already quite high, as in any developing field.

Maria Ignatova noted that the issue of obsolescence of professions is complex: it is influenced by a shortage of skills, demographics, the prestige of specialties, regional and industry specifics. According to her, one cannot simply say that, for example, accountants or movers will soon disappear because of robots. However, the expert added that in a number of areas there is an excess of staff in junior positions and automation of routine tasks. Therefore, applicants should upgrade their skills, especially in professions affected by automation: call center operator, office administrator, clerk, copywriter, translator, event manager, designer, tester, retoucher, SMM manager, methodologist and treasurer.

Digitalization promotes the emergence of new professions, even in traditional industries. According to the Russian Environmental Operator (REO), announced on November 1 following the results of the III International Congress "Russian Engineer" at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, in the coming years, data analysis specialists, architects of digital counterparts of natural systems and engineers working with remote sensing technologies will become the most in-demand environmental professions.

As a development engineer at one of the major banks told Izvestia, today the ability to quickly master new technologies is relevant even in those areas that are already considered "advanced." For example, IT specialists have already begun to actively develop neural networks in order to compete in the market, the source noted.

Why are new professions emerging?

Investments in digitalization are projected to approach 6 trillion rubles in 2025, an unprecedented amount, said Yaroslav Meshalkin, an expert on digital communications. The large-scale import substitution program obliged the subjects of the critical information infrastructure to switch to domestic solutions, which stimulated the demand for technological personnel in all segments of the economy.

VR and AR solutions in Russia are being actively implemented mainly in the B2B segment. Large companies use virtual reality for staff training, industrial visualization, and medical simulations. It is no coincidence that the corporate segment accounts for over 70% of the entire VR/AR market in Russia," said Yaroslav Meshalkin.

According to him, 3D printing is becoming a critical technology in the aerospace, medical and jewelry industries. IoT solutions are being implemented across entire cities.

The educational services market quickly adapted to the new demand, Yaroslav Meshalkin emphasized. Courses on VR/AR development are offered by major online platforms, although students are not always satisfied with their quality. 3D printing is taught, for example, by specialized universities: MISIS, MAI, Russian University of Economics. Plekhanova et al. IoT education is offered at several levels, from school curricula to master's degrees at leading universities.

Salaries depend a lot on the specialist's level of knowledge, said Yulia Zagitova, founder of Breaking Trends. For example, a Junior VR/AR developer in Moscow or St. Petersburg can expect a salary of 120-150 thousand rubles. But the Senior one is already worth 250-400 thousand + bonuses. Salaries of 3D printing specialists start at about the same values. While an IoT engineer at the entry level can be offered up to 200 thousand per month and 300 – 500 thousand. for Senior.

Today, not just performers are valued, but creators of new technological environments — specialists who are able to combine engineering thinking, analytical skills and creativity, says Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, federal coordinator of the Digital Russia party project.

Russia is gradually building its own ecosystem of digital engineering, and the demand for specialists working with VR, IoT and additive technologies is directly related to the tasks of technological sovereignty. These professions are becoming key in smart cities, industrial automation, education and medicine projects, where digital technologies are changing familiar processes," he said.

On the other hand, according to him, the decline in interest in a number of traditional professions, especially in the field of services and communications, indicates a large-scale transition to automation of routine tasks.

The main task of the government and business is to create conditions under which people will be able to learn new competencies in a timely manner and remain in demand. To do this, it is important to develop a system of additional education, digital accelerators and industry championships, where future specialists are formed, he concluded.
