US President Donald Trump announced an appeal from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who asked the country to be excluded from US sanctions against Russian oil. The head of the White House told reporters about this on October 31, specifying that he had refused.

"He asked to be excluded, but we have not yet given permission, but he has asked," the American leader said.

The Associated Press reported that Orban announced on Friday his plans to convince President Trump to grant Hungary relief from Washington's recently announced sanctions against Russian oil. At the same time, the politician said that he intends to talk with the American leader next week.

On October 22, the US Treasury Department announced that the United States was imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. It was clarified that these companies are included in the sanctions list for activities in the Russian energy sector.

In addition, on October 20, the Council of the European Union (EU) approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. It was also decided to ban the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. The measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.

On October 24, Orban announced that Hungary was looking for ways to circumvent the European Union (EU) initiative to ban oil and gas imports from Russia. As Svetlana Zhurova, deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs committee, stated on October 24, the Hungarian Prime Minister speaks honestly about the interests of his country and people, without doing anything on the sly. This makes him sympathetic to the population of his country.
