The Russians won four medals at the World Gymnastics Championships, which took place in Jakarta. Angelina Melnikova won in the individual all-around and vault, and also won silver in the uneven bars. Daniel Marinov became the bronze medalist in the uneven bars exercises. In the unofficial medal standings, the Russians took fourth place, passing ahead of the teams of China (3-1-3), Japan (2-2-1) and the USA (2-1-2).

At the maximum

Angelina Melnikova left a lot of emotions in the individual all-around, where she became a two-time absolute world champion, and the next day she had to compete in individual disciplines. Friday's performance was to begin with the final in the vault. In this event, Melnikova qualified from first place, and another Russian, Anna Kalmykova, qualified from fifth. However, these positions are not crucial. In the final, everything has to start over.

The women's vault medal draw started with a drama. The competition was opened by one of the main contenders for gold, Chinese Deng Yalan. And then she dropped out. In her first jump, the Chinese representative simply flew over the horse without even touching it. Yalan's collapse was clearly visible on her face. The gymnast was crying, trying to get ready for the second jump. The tearful pause turned out to be long, until the coach got up to her and took her with him to the podium.

Then Melnikova's competitors continued to pour in, although not as brightly as the Chinese woman. The reigning European champion Karina Schoenmaier from Germany did something incomprehensible in her first attempt and received low marks. Kalmykova couldn't handle the pressure either — she sprawled across the mats upon landing.

The leader before the jumps of Angelina, who performed penultimately, was 16-year-old Canadian Lia-Monica Fontaine. She did not have the most difficult, but high-quality jumps, which helped her to take the first medal of the World Championships in her career, but not the gold one. Melnikova needed to do everything she knows well. And the Russian woman again left no questions. A confident first jump with a base difficulty of 5.00 and a magnificent second with a high cost of 5.60.

From the emotions of the gymnast, it was immediately clear what price the medal would be awarded to her today. And the others had no doubts either. For Melnikova, this gold was the first in her career in individual projectiles at the World Championships and the Olympics. It was difficult to hope for a second victory that day. After all, Olympic champion Kaylia Nemour from Algeria dominates on the uneven bars. She confirmed the status of the favorite of the projectile both in the qualification and in the final of the individual all-around.

Melnikova got into the top 8 gymnasts on uneven bars with the third result, and another Russian Leila Vasilyeva became the fifth in the qualification. By the way, Lyudmila Roshchina took the eighth place in the preliminary competitions, but there can only be two participants from one country in the final.

Melnikova demonstrated a stable and clean performance, receiving in the final exactly the same marks as in the qualification — 14,500.

Others have not been able to surpass this result. The closest was Yang Fanyuwei, who beat Angelina in qualifying. But the Chinese woman blurred the ending with her uncertain landing and received exactly the same score — 14,500. And since her difficulty was higher, but the execution was worse, the Russian turned out to be higher in the protocol.

Then it became clear that we would definitely have a medal on the uneven bars. Before the performance of the final participant, it was clear that it was at least silver. However, Nemours was closing the program. Here it was possible to hope for "what if he makes a mistake," but this did not happen. The Algerian once again proved her superiority on the uneven bars and took gold by a huge margin. The second place for Melnikova in this situation is the maximum possible. With a collection of three medals and a big smile, she completes the World Championships.

Lost points

Our men are leaving Indonesia with one medal, — Daniel Marinov became the bronze medalist of the 2025 World Cup in the uneven bars. It was the first international tournament for a 20-year-old athlete. Marinov, despite a long break this season due to injury, got off to a great start - he qualified for the finals of three separate types: parallel bars, vault and crossbar. In the all-around qualification, he took fourth place with a score of 81.932 points, but in the final he made a mistake on the crossbar and became only seventh (80.766).

"I make the first element of Kasina, I let go of my hands, a moment and... a fall. I can't believe I fell. I can't realize that I didn't make my favorite projectile. I really wanted to. I was very upset. All the vivid emotions that filled me after each shell instantly went out," Marinov wrote on social networks.

Marinov considered that he was also sued on the uneven bars.: "I didn't take a single step, I didn't make a single blemish, I didn't jump off the board. But Zhang Boheng goes out to do it — he sat down here, took a step here, bent over there, jumped off, shoulders low, and landed uncontrollably. I get 8.8 points for my performance, and he gets 8.733."

According to the athlete, he completed the rings exactly the same way as on the day of qualifying, but for some reason the final score was lower - 0.25 points were lost somewhere.

On Saturday, everything worked out on the uneven bars — a confident third place. Only the six-time world champion, winner of two Olympic Games in this projectile, 27-year-old Chinese Zou Jingyuan (15,300), and Japanese Tomoharu Tsunogai (14,500) were higher than Marinov (14,466 points).

For the vault, Marinov scored 14.150 points and took seventh place, losing one position to Mukhammadjon Yakubov (14.183). In the final, the Russian finished eighth on the crossbar with 12.566 points.

Thus, our athletes have completed their performances at the World Championships in Jakarta. As expected, the leaders of the national team brought awards to our piggy bank. Melnikova and Marinov experienced some health problems, but eventually they managed. Of course, theoretically it was possible to count on more. For example, hopes for Ilya Stuttering on the rings were not fulfilled. However, given his long absence from the international arena, we can say that everything turned out very well.
