- Gymnast Melnikova's triumph at the World Cup in Jakarta was called a story of overcoming
Angelina Melnikova became a three-time world champion in gymnastics. She won three medals at the championships in Jakarta: two gold and a silver. Our athlete received her first title of absolute world champion four years ago, but then there was a forced pause. Pavel Matveev, a correspondent for Izvestia, spoke about the landmark victory for Russian sports on October 24.
"A lot of people tell me that they really like floor exercises. We did these floor exercises together with a friend, she is a dancer. Something fun, something dancing, was planned. It seems to me that it turned out because all the viewers are very warmly accepting of floor exercises. They are bright," said gymnast, three—time world champion in artistic gymnastics Angelina Melnikova.
For several years now, our athletes have almost not been allowed to participate in international competitions. However, now the situation has changed, at least in gymnastics, and all thanks to Angelina Melnikova.
"For an athlete, competitions are his whole life. In general, this is an existential question, a question of existence, a question of the meaning of life in general, and therefore, in this sense, of course, one can only congratulate her. For the fact that she didn't break down, for the fact that she didn't end her career ahead of time, for the fact that she endured, for the fact that she maintained her level, and most importantly, she trained like hell and just really spent a lot of effort. She competed with a very serious knee injury and nevertheless won anyway," said sports columnist Alexander Kuzmak.
There are already three medals, including gold in the all-around, that is, when you are the strongest in everything at once. No matter how much you avoid loud phrases, this is a story of overcoming. Angelina is 25, which is not a young age by gymnastics standards. But she didn't give up.
"I'm 25, and I have enough experience not to pay attention to previous results, for example, qualifications. And today I came out with a clean slate, and I tried to do all my programs well," Melnikova said.
In her social networks, Melnikova also shared the news of the victory, which is a cause for pride for the whole world.
"She took the medals everywhere and is taking them home. And I am incredibly happy about this, because I have been waiting a long time for permission to perform on the international stage again. Finally, it all happened. Yes, of course, I don't like that there is no flag, anthem, yes, I don't like it. But she did what I thought she would do. I want to congratulate the whole Voronezh school, where she was found, where she was raised," two—time Olympic champion, nine-time world champion Svetlana Khorkina shared her emotions.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Melnikova received a gold medal in the vault and a silver medal in the uneven bars. It was clarified that she scored 14.466 points for her first performance, 14,500 points for the second.
On October 23, Melnikova became a two-time world champion in the individual all-around in gymnastics. The athlete took first place at the World Championships in Jakarta, scoring 55.066 points in the sum of four exercises. She won a medal at the World Gymnastics Championships for the first time since 2021.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Melnikova on her victory at the World Gymnastics Championships. The Russian leader called the gymnast's performance triumphant and noted that it was a wonderful gift for fans, coaches and mentors, as well as everyone who supported her on her way to the highest standard medal.
Melnikova, in turn, spoke about her emotions after her performance in Jakarta. The gymnast said she regretted making the same mistake on balance beam, but called her performance pretty clean. She added that the audience likes her floor exercises the most.
