- The State Duma declared Orban's honesty after his words about circumventing sanctions
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban speaks honestly about the interests of his country and people. Svetlana Zhurova, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, expressed this opinion on Friday, October 24, reacting to the Hungarian leader's statement about working to circumvent the decision of the European Union (EU) to ban the import of oil and gas from Russia.
"He says it openly, publicly. He doesn't come up with anything on the sly," the deputy said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
Zhurova noted that Orban makes decisions consistently and honestly, which arouses sympathy among the Hungarian population.
"In such a situation, other European countries may try to condemn him in some way, but they know that the population will support him. And it won't end well for the European Union. That's why they let him do it. Moreover, at some points he is principled and takes a position that we may not even like. This is democracy," she added.
Earlier in the day, Orban said that Hungary is looking for ways to circumvent the EU initiative to ban oil and gas imports from Russia, according to the website. kp.ru .
On October 20, the EU Council approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. In addition, the EU has also decided to impose a ban on the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.
