- Political scientist Rasmussen pointed out the ineffectiveness of the new US sanctions against Russia.
New US sanctions against Russia will be ineffective, as the country's economy has managed to adjust to the restrictions, and their effects are more felt in Europe, exacerbating its economic problems. This was stated on October 23 in an interview with Izvestia by American political scientist, retired Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen of the United States Army.
According to him, even increased pressure from the United States and Europe will not stop the special operation in Ukraine. Instead, the sanctions are only exacerbating the European economic crisis, leading to production problems and deindustrialization in the region.
"Sanctions won't do anything. I don't know who they're going to sanction there. Gazprom, probably, or someone else. All they will achieve is that Russia will redirect the flows, conclude deals with other countries with settlements in national currencies," the expert said.
Rasmussen said that Russia is actively diversifying its economy, reorienting resource flows to China and India. This, he said, reduces its dependence on external sanctions. He also warned that European countries dependent on energy supplies would face a worsening economic situation in the event of further sanctions.
Rasmussen expressed the opinion that American sanctions are unlikely to achieve their goals. According to him, they are likely to have a negative impact on the European economy, especially given that restrictions against Russian companies and the energy sector are already largely in effect, and that American decisions ignore the peculiarities of Russian culture and the interests of Europeans.
The expert expressed confidence that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the White House, Donald Trump, would take place, but probably not in the near future. The parties indicated their intention to conduct preliminary work and discuss a number of issues, which, in the opinion of the political scientist, makes the meeting worthwhile. Despite Trump's statement about the futility of negotiations due to the immutability of Russia's position, the expert considered that Russia was not obliged to change its point of view.
He also noted that the positions of Kiev and European countries also remain the same, and, in his opinion, they should reconsider them. In this regard, Rasmussen suggests that Trump may need to put pressure on Europe and Ukraine first before taking drastic measures against China and Russia.
"Trump said it was a waste of time, saying the Russians had not changed their position. I don't understand why he decided that Russia should change its position," he concluded.
On October 23, political analyst Garland Nixon expressed the opinion that Trump is aware of the inevitability of Russia's victory in the conflict in Ukraine, despite the efforts of the American administration and pressure from internal opponents. The expert also pointed out that Russia's position on the conflict in Ukraine has not changed since 2014.
