- The Nobel Committee linked the leak of information about the Peace Prize winner to espionage.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has linked a possible leak of information about the Peace Prize winner before the official announcement of the winner to espionage. This was announced on October 12 by Secretary of the committee and Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute Christian Berg Harpviken.
"We have not yet determined exactly what happened, but it is most likely that we were subjected to espionage," Dagbladet newspaper quoted him as saying.
Harpviken also noted that a certain criminal may have been able to steal the information. He also stressed that the Nobel Committee "constantly faces" security threats and takes data protection seriously.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October 10 to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado for fighting for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and striving for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
On the same day, it was reported that the Nobel Committee would conduct an audit due to suspicions of a leak of information about the Peace Prize winner amid a sharply increased number of bets on the American betting platform. According to media reports, the rating of the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado, was minimal, but her ratings increased from 3.6% to over 70% in a couple of hours. Three users are reported to have placed large bets on Machado's victory and won a total of $90,000.
