The Turkologist called Erdogan's upcoming meeting with Trump fateful
In an interview with Izvestia, Vladimir Avatkov, Head of the Department of the Middle and Post-Soviet East at the INION RAS, Doctor of Political Sciences, commented on the first meeting of the leaders of Turkey and the United States at the White House scheduled for September 25 in six years.
The political scientist stressed that, given the weak predictability of the head of the White House, Donald Trump, there can be no unequivocal expectations from the leaders' meeting.
"This will be a serious enough, if not to say, fateful meeting. Not only the relations between the two countries are at stake, but also the future of Turkey itself. Despite the pressure, Ankara has not yet abandoned the S-400, but at the same time it does not want to reduce its cooperation with the United States and receive the F-16 and F-35," the expert concludes.
According to the political scientist, Ankara and Washington are important to each other.
"Relations with the United States are extremely important for Turkey. The republic has the second largest army in NATO and is one of the few effective players besides the United States in the western camp. But at the same time, she has close relations with Russia and does not join the illegal anti-Russian Western sanctions. The Americans need to either completely subjugate Turkey or make it part of the "arc of instability." They will be ready to put up with it as long as it at least partially fulfills its functions, including undermining Russia's efforts in the South Caucasus and Central Asia," Avatkov believes.
