The London police leadership is discussing the possibility of arming ordinary officers with firearms. This was reported on September 14 by The Telegraph newspaper, citing a police report.

"An internal investigation reviewed by the Telegraph found that the Metropolitan Police should consider regularly arming officers with semi—automatic pistols to protect them from the growing threat to their lives," the newspaper reports.

It is noted that after a knife attack on two policemen in the capital in 2022, the leadership of law enforcement agencies decided to review the current rules. Then both employees were seriously injured.

Currently, firearms are allowed only to a narrow circle of people — highly qualified specialists from special units, police officers involved in operations, and those involved in the elimination of dangerous animals. For the rest of the staff, only walkie-talkies and gas canisters are available during office hours, the newspaper notes.

On September 13, British Interior Minister Shabana Mahmoud threatened to respond to the law to protesters in London who attacked police officers. Mahmoud also thanked law enforcement officials who helped ensure the peaceful nature of most of the protests.

On this day, more than 100,000 people took to the streets of London, who also opposed illegal migration. Their demonstration, organized by right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, was held under the slogan "Unite the Kingdom."
