UN Secretary General condemns Israeli strikes on Qatar
On September 9, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Anthony Guterres, condemned the Israeli strikes on the territory of Qatar.
"I condemn this blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity. All sides should work to establish a permanent ceasefire, not destroy it," he said.
In addition, Guterres added that excessive military spending would not guarantee peace. According to him, they will only exacerbate distrust and divert resources from the foundations of stability.
"A safer world begins with the fact that we invest at least as much money in fighting poverty as in fighting wars," said the UN Secretary General.
On September 9, a Hamas negotiating delegation was attacked in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The attack occurred as the negotiating team was discussing a U.S.-proposed cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
On the same day, Al Hadath TV channel, citing sources, reported that the head of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Khalil al-Haya, and three other members of the leadership were killed during the Israeli operation. A little later, Hamas denied this information and stated that among those killed in the attack were Khalil al-Haya's son, one of his assistants, as well as a Qatari officer.
The Jerusalem Post newspaper reported that the US government was aware in advance of the planned Israeli attack on Hamas representatives in Qatar and agreed to launch a strike.
