- The media reported on Finland's decision to abandon the use of the Kalashnikov assault rifle
Finland plans to replace Kalashnikov assault rifles with analogues from Western countries. This was announced on August 28 by the Yle television and radio company.
"The Finnish army is preparing to switch from Kalashnikov—based assault rifles to a Western equivalent," the article says.
Sako has introduced a new Sako ARG automatic rifle, which will replace the outdated RK 62 and RK 95. The development was carried out for more than 10 years with the participation of the armies of Finland and Sweden, taking into account operation in Arctic conditions.
The agreement with the Finnish Defense Forces was signed in the spring of 2023. Three rifle variants of different calibers are expected.
On August 26, Yle reported that Finland plans to return antipersonnel mines to the army in January 2026. It was clarified that these weapons were decommissioned in 2012 as part of the Ottawa Treaty, which Finland signed. However, last year, the country decided to withdraw from this agreement, and from January 10, 2026, the six-month waiting period ends, after which Finland will be able to use antipersonnel mines again.
