- Trump has threatened countries with existing digital taxes with the introduction of additional duties
US President Donald Trump intends to impose additional duties on advanced technologies and semiconductors from those states that have imposed taxes on digital services. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on August 25.
According to Trump, digital taxes are aimed at discriminating against American technologies, which allegedly leads to harm to the United States. As the head of the White House noted, they also open the way for the largest technology manufacturers from China, so they need to be "put an end to."
"I am notifying all countries with digital taxes, legislation, rules or regulations that, if these discriminatory actions are not eliminated, I, as President of the United States, will impose significant additional tariffs on this country's exports to the United States," the agency quoted him as saying.
It is noted that this warning was made by Trump a week after the United States and the European Union (EU) agreed in a joint statement that they would work together to eliminate "unreasonable" trade barriers.
On August 15, Trump announced his intention to announce possible duties on steel and microchip imports during the week of August 18-24.
Earlier, on August 7, Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia that Trump's tariff threats against China were "empty words," and also noted that a significant part of high technology in the United States depends on components manufactured in China.
