69 people were detained in Chisinau during a protest by the Pobeda opposition bloc
Moldovan police reported that 69 people were detained at the protest of the Pobeda opposition bloc on Saturday, August 17, and 148 protocols were drawn up due to various offenses. This was announced on August 17 by the press service of the department in the Telegram channel.
The action was organized by the Pobeda opposition bloc against the policy of President Maia Sandu. The protesters demanded the release of political prisoners and an end to repression against the opposition.
"69 protesters and three vehicles were taken to the inspectorate. 76 tents, four sleeping bags and an air mattress were seized," the police press service said.
The police clarified that 148 protocols had been drawn up, most of them related to corruption in the organization of meetings and violations of the rules of operation of vehicles. 12 protocols were also drawn up due to hooliganism.
One of the representatives of the Party of Socialists participating in the rally against the appointment of new judges of the Constitutional Court (CC) of the country outside the parliament building in Chisinau, Bogdan Tsyrdea, in an interview with a journalist from Izvestia, said that protest sentiments in Moldova will increase due to the developing economic crisis, inflation, unemployment and lawlessness in the country.
He noted that protest actions have already taken place across the country, but the authorities are trying to stop them.
"Yesterday there was a protest rally at the railway station, where they dispersed the tent city, arrested Pokemon, Labuba, God knows who. There's another rally today. Earlier there were more rallies. Transport workers' associations come out to protest, farmers come out," he stressed.
In turn, former Moldovan President Igor Dodon said that the current authorities understand that they will not get a parliamentary majority in the upcoming elections on September 28, so "they are trying to hedge themselves with various methods that can be considered usurpation of power."
"Just a few weeks ago, they changed the law and gave additional powers to the Security Council and President Maia Sandu, despite the fact that we have a parliamentary country. This is unconstitutional," he said.
According to Dodon, the authorities seek to establish control over the Constitutional Court in order, if necessary, not to recognize the election results or block the nomination of the prime minister from the opposition.
Thousands of residents of Gagauzia arrived in Chisinau earlier, on August 16, to peacefully protest against the illegal detention of Hutsuls. Hutsul supporters chanted slogans calling for the resignation of the Moldovan authorities. One of them said that they were trying to pit the Gagauz people against the Moldovans, since Romanian citizens were in power. However, this will not happen, as the Gagauz and Moldovans have always lived peacefully.
On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of her alleged financing of the Shor party. Initially, the prosecutor's office requested nine years in prison for her. On the same day, Evgenia Hutsul reported on the great support provided to her: the people of the autonomy gathered at the courthouse, where her family members were not allowed at the time of sentencing. On August 13, international lawyers joined the defense of the Bashkan of Gagauzia.
