- The most powerful prayer for the Transfiguration of the Lord: which one to read, what to ask for
Every year on August 19, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord. On this day, believers remember the appearance of the divine essence of Christ on Mount Tabor 40 days before his Resurrection. In the national calendar, the holiday is known as the Apple Savior. Traditionally, divine services are held in honor of the holiday with the consecration of apples and other fruits. Izvestia tells us which prayers to read on the Transfiguration of the Lord.
Troparion, kontakion, Akathist to the Transfiguration of the Lord
During the festive services for the Transfiguration of the Lord in the temple, you can hear several types of hymns: troparion, kontakion and akathist. Each of them has its own significance for the service.
Troparion of the Transfiguration of the Lord
The troparion is one of the most ancient types of Christian hymnography. This is a short chant that reveals the essence of the holiday. It is dedicated to a specific evangelical event or a saint's feat.
"Thou art transfigured on the mountain, O Christ God, who hast shown Thy glory as a disciple, so that Thy everlasting Light may shine upon us sinners through the prayers of the Mother of God, glory to Thee!"
Translation: "You were transformed on the mountain, O Christ God, showing Your disciples Your glory as much as it was possible for them. May Your eternal light shine upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God. Giver of light, glory to You!"
Kontakion of the Transfiguration of the Lord
Kontakion is another short chant reflecting the essence of the holiday. It complements the troparion and develops its main theme.
"You were transformed on the mountain, and as Your disciples are housed, You have seen Your glory, O Christ God, so that when they see You crucified, they will understand Your suffering freely, and they will preach to the world, for You are truly the radiance of the Father."
Translation: "You were transformed on the mountain, and as far as Your disciples could accommodate, they contemplated Your glory, O Christ God, so that when they saw You crucified, they would understand that Your suffering was voluntary and would proclaim to the world that You truly are the radiance of the Father."
Akathist of the Transfiguration of the Lord
The akathist is a hymn of praise that tells in detail about the events of the holiday and is read standing up. It consists of 13 kontakions and 13 ikos (long texts), each of which contains laudatory addresses to Christ, the Mother of God or a saint. The full text of the Akathist to the Transfiguration of the Lord can be found on Orthodox websites.
To whom and for what do they pray for the Transfiguration of the Lord
On the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, believers glorify Christ, who revealed the radiance of Divine light on Mount Tabor. Traditionally, on the holiday, worshippers ask the Son of God to shine this light on their lives. They most often pray for the strengthening of faith, the remission of sins, guidance on the right path, spiritual transformation and the gift of grace.
At the same time, the Orthodox Church does not set any restrictions on the content and duration of prayer on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The main thing is that the prayer should be sincere.
The most powerful prayer for the Transfiguration of the Lord
On the Transfiguration of the Lord, believers can pray in their own words or recite a special prayer of the feast. That's what it sounds like.:
"Lord Jesus Christ, our God, in the living, unapproachable Light, is the radiance of the Glory of the Father and the Image of His Hypostasis! When the fulfillment of the times came, You humbled Yourself for Your ineffable mercy to the fallen human race, accepted the sight of a slave, humbled Yourself, and obeyed even to death. Therefore, before the Cross and Your free passion on Mount Tabor, you were transformed in Your Divine Glory before Your holy disciples and Apostles, hiding little of Your perception of the flesh, so that when they see You crucified and put to death, they will understand Your free suffering and Divinity. Grant to all of us, too, the Transfiguration of Thy most pure Flesh to those who celebrate, ascend with pure hearts and unclean minds to Thy Holy mountain, to the villages of Thy holy glory, where the voice of those who celebrate is pure, the voice of unspeakable joy, so that we may see Thy Glory face to face with them in the never-ending days of Thy kingdom, and with all the saints, From time immemorial, let us glorify Your All-holy name with Your Beginningless Father and Your All-holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages."
