Yablochny Spas, or the Transfiguration of the Lord, is one of the main Orthodox holidays of summer, which is celebrated annually on August 19. This day symbolizes transformation, renewal and gratitude to God for a bountiful harvest. At the celebration, it is customary to consecrate the first ripe apples and other fruits of the new harvest in order to receive blessings and health. After the consecration, the housewives prepare various apple dishes and drinks — pies, baked apples with honey and nuts, compotes and jams. Izvestia tells us more about how important it is to spend a holiday and what can be prepared for it.

Why is the holiday called Yablochny Spas?

Yablochny Spas is the popular name of the Orthodox feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which is celebrated annually on August 19. This day got its name due to the tradition of consecrating the first fruits of a new harvest, especially apples, which by this time ripen in our latitudes. In the Orthodox Church, this holiday is associated with an event described in the Gospel: Jesus Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor, revealing his divine attributes to the apostles. The word "Savior" itself comes from the word "Savior", emphasizing the spiritual connection with the Lord.

In the West and in Greece, grapes are usually consecrated on this day, which is a symbol of the Eucharist and is used to make holy wine. However, in Russia, where grapes grew poorly, apples became the symbol of the holiday. That's why the alternative name "Apple Savior" appeared — in honor of ripe apples, which are consecrated in churches and which people treat each other to after the service.

The holiday symbolizes not only the physical transformation of nature — the transition from summer to autumn and the completion of the harvest — but also the spiritual renewal of man. In this context, the apple becomes a symbol of fertility, health and divine blessing.

The main traditions of the Apple Savior

Yablochny Spas incorporates a large number of traditions that reflect the deep connection between the religious meaning of the holiday and folk customs. The central ritual is the consecration of the first fruits of the harvest in church temples.

People bring apples, pears, grapes and other fruits in baskets for the priest to perform a prayer service over them and sprinkle holy water. These consecrated fruits symbolize gratitude to God for the gifts of the earth and serve as a spiritual blessing for health and well-being.

Before the consecration, it is not customary to eat fresh apples and other fruits of the new harvest: the ancestors believed that they could bring misfortune and troubles. After the church service, some of the consecrated fruits are distributed to relatives and those in need, which emphasizes the tradition of generosity and mutual assistance. In the evening, family feasts are often held with various apple treats.

It is also customary on this day to commemorate deceased relatives, visit cemeteries and leave consecrated apples on graves, since these fruits were considered "heavenly", giving peace to souls. According to popular beliefs, the first fruit eaten after consecration can supposedly tell about fate: a sweet apple portends joy and happiness, and a sour one — difficult trials.

Of particular importance is the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord itself — spiritual renewal and purification of the soul. In this regard, Yablochny Spas tries to avoid conflicts and negative emotions, devoting time to prayer, reconciliation and good deeds.

Signs and prohibitions of the Apple Savior

On this day in Russia, the weather was closely monitored to predict what winter and autumn would be like. If it was warm and sunny on August 19, severe frosts and a snowy winter were expected. A rainy day foreshadowed a wet autumn. It is believed that whatever the weather is on Yablochny Spas, it will be the same on October 14 — on Pokrov.

People said, "The Second Savior has come — keep your mittens in reserve," hinting that it was usually getting colder by this time. A sunny and warm day promised a snowy winter, a cold and harsh January. If the leaves started turning yellow ahead of time, autumn will come earlier than the calendar date. Insects and birds were also observed. If bees are actively collecting honey, they expect well-being in the family, and starlings in large numbers foreshadowed a cold winter.

It was also customary to put the house in order in advance so that the holiday would be safe and without trouble. In the church, it was forbidden to bring meat and dairy products for consecration, alcohol — only the fruits of the new harvest and their derivatives.

In addition, there were beliefs that anyone who treats others with consecrated apples on this day will attract good luck and ensure a fruitful year. It was forbidden to swear, do hard work, or swear: the days were considered holy and needed pious behavior.

The most powerful prayers for the Apple Savior (Transfiguration of the Lord)

Yablochny Spas, which coincides with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a special day of spiritual transformation and renewal. During this period, believers turn to God with prayers for blessings, protection, health and spiritual strength. Prayers for the Transfiguration of the Lord are traditionally read in church during divine services and at home in prayer solitude, with a pure heart and faith.

Prayer for the Transfiguration of the Lord (traditional Orthodox prayer):

"Lord Jesus Christ, our God, the Radiance of the Father's Glory and the Image of His Hypostasis! When the end of time comes, for Your ineffable mercy to the fallen human race, You have humbled Yourself, accepted the sight of a slave, humbled Yourself, and obeyed even to death. Grant that we all may see the Transfiguration of Your most pure Flesh as we celebrate, and with pure hearts and unclean minds ascend to Your Holy Mountain, to the villages of Your holy glory, where the voice of those who celebrate is pure, the voice of unspeakable joy, so that we may see Your Glory face to face with them in the never-ending days of Your kingdom, and with all the saints, From time immemorial, let us glorify Your All-holy name with Your Beginningless Father and Your All-holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."

A short, powerful prayer for the Apple Savior on Blessings:

"Lord, bless this day of the Apple Savior, may it bring joy, prosperity and abundance. Protect us from all evil and grant us health and well-being. Amen to that."

A three-fold repetition of the prayer for enlightenment and the overshadowing of the light of Christ:

"You were transfigured on the mountain, Christ God, showing Your disciples Your glory, how they could bear it. Shine upon us sinners Thy eternal Light, through the prayers of the Mother of God, Giver of Light, glory to Thee."

Prayer for protection from evil on the day of the Transfiguration:

"On the day of Your Transfiguration, wrap your protective arm around me. Drive away enemies and dangers from me and my relatives, endow me with your strength and faith so that I can persevere through all trials and preserve peace of mind. Amen to that."

In addition to reading prayers, it is customary to mentally ask God for spiritual transformation, forgiveness of sins, and strength for good deeds. Prayers fill believers with light and grace, and help them find inner peace and harmony with themselves, nature, and God.

What to cook for Apple Pie

Yablochny Spas, celebrated on August 19, falls during the strict Dormition Fast, so any meat, dairy products and eggs are prohibited on this day. On some days it is allowed to eat fish, seafood, vegetable oil and some dry red wine.

A variety of dishes made from apples and other fruits of the new harvest are traditionally prepared for the celebration. One of the most interesting recipes is apple marmalade using ancient technology: selected juicy apples are boiled until soft, then rubbed through a sieve, mixed with sugar syrup and lemon zest and poured into stone pots to solidify. This marmalade turns out to be dense and fragrant, and it is stored for a long time, as a real gift of summer and autumn.

The classic baked dish is charlotte, cooked without milk and eggs, with thinly sliced apples, which are placed in a mold and filled with a lean dough based on vegetable oil, honey or sugar. The pie turns out to be light, with a delicate texture and a bright apple flavor.

In addition to it, they baked a lean honey cake — not the usual "honey cake" for many, but rather a cupcake in sugar water with raisins, prunes, nuts and apples.

An unusual treat is considered to be an apple strudel. For it, the dough is kneaded in water and vegetable oil until elastic, rolled out very thinly and filled with a mixture of sour-sweet apples, raisins, walnuts and cinnamon. Baked apples with honey and nuts are an equally fragrant and healthy dish. The core is removed, filled with a mixture of honey, walnuts and spices, and baked until soft.

You can also make apple mousse with semolina, a delicate dessert in which boiled apples are whipped with semolina, a pinch of citric acid and sugar. Some housewives make jam from apples with orange juice: apple slices are infused with sugar and orange juice, and then slowly boiled until thick, getting a fragrant and rich treat.

Such dishes not only diversify the festive table, but also help to adhere to the fast, without giving up new gastronomic impressions.
