The US authorities have secretly placed location tracking devices in batches of modern artificial intelligence (AI) chips to detect cases of cargo being redirected to China. This was reported on August 13 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.

"These measures are aimed at detecting the redirection of AI chips to destinations subject to US export restrictions, and apply only to selected shipments under investigation," the material says.

It is noted that trackers can help in bringing cases against individuals and companies profiting from violations of United States export controls. According to the publication, location tracking is a tool that American law enforcement agencies have been using for decades to check the path of goods under export restrictions.

According to one of the sources of the publication, in recent years trackers have been used to combat illicit trafficking in semiconductors.

Earlier, on August 5, the US Department of Justice announced the arrest of two Chinese citizens in the country on charges of illegally exporting expensive microchips used in AI technologies. It was clarified that they exported the microchips deliberately, and violating the export control Reform law would result in 20 years in prison for both Chinese representatives.
