Living in a megalopolis with its speed, multitasking and constant stress leads to an increase in complaints of fatigue, irritability and a feeling of lack of strength. It is important that these symptoms may conceal serious neurological and psychoemotional conditions. Irina Krashkina, a psychotherapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD, told Izvestia about this on August 13.

Asthenia is not just fatigue after a day at work, but a chronic condition characterized by constant weakness, irritability, and fatigue.

"Studies show that up to 40% of residents of large cities experience symptoms of asthenia at least once a year, especially office workers, drivers, health workers and young parents," Krashkina said.

Frustration is a psychological condition that occurs when it is impossible to achieve a goal, despite efforts. In urban environments, this happens all the time due to traffic jams, delays, and work conflicts. According to the doctor, the 2022 HSE study showed that one in three Muscovites regularly experiences bouts of irritation and feelings of injustice.

The urban environment negatively affects sleep and the nervous system. Noise, light pollution, and the use of gadgets lead to disruptions of biological rhythms. According to WHO, 68% of urban residents suffer from sleep disorders, which is a major factor in the development of asthenia and anxiety.

"The consequences of asthenia and frustration can be serious: an increased risk of depression, impaired memory and attention, decreased immunity, and the development of autonomic disorders. People with chronic asthenia are three times more likely to go to a cardiologist with heart complaints, although the problem often lies in nervous stress," Krashkina warned.

Treatment begins with a diagnosis of the causes of the condition. The main methods include lifestyle correction, psychological support, if necessary, drug therapy and physiotherapy procedures. With timely treatment, 80% of patients achieve significant improvement in one to three months.

Asthenia is a signal to the body about the need for rest. Ignoring the symptoms can lead to more severe conditions such as depression or chronic fatigue syndrome. It is important to understand that the problem is not in the city itself, but in the lifestyle. Regular walks in the park reduce the risk of developing asthenia and anxiety by 40%.

"Digital fatigue" has become a new reality: spending 8-10 hours a day in front of screens causes eye fatigue, headaches, and irritability. Every fifth patient with such complaints suffers from gadget overload," the specialist said.

To protect your health in urban environments, it is important to follow a sleep pattern, take regular breaks, walk in the fresh air and not suppress emotions. If symptoms appear, you should consult a doctor in a timely manner.

About 60% of residents of megacities face similar problems. Asthenia, frustration, and chronic fatigue are not weaknesses, but reversible conditions that require careful attention. The ability to rest on time and seek help is the key to maintaining health in a modern city, the psychotherapist concluded.

Earlier, on April 24, Galina Smirnova, an endocrinologist at the Scandinavian Health Center, told Izvestia that those who experience drowsiness and low mood in the spring will benefit from gentle physical activity and light nutrition with sufficient vitamins. According to her, urban residents are particularly susceptible to spring asthenia.
