A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska could start a conversation about the territorial issue within the framework of a peace agreement on the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced on August 11 by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"When it comes to this territorial issue, when it comes to recognizing, for example, in a future deal, that Russia de facto controls part of Ukraine's territory, it should be an actual recognition, not a de jure political recognition," he said in an interview with ABC News.

According to Rutte, the issue of territories should be on the agenda. He also clarified that during the talks, the Russian and American presidents should discuss the topic of security guarantees for Kiev.

Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 8. According to him, the heads of state will meet on Friday, August 15. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. According to him, the economic interests of the states intersect in the region, and in Alaska there are prospects for the implementation of joint projects.

Later, on August 11, Bloomberg reported on an attempt by Zelensky and the heads of European countries to prepare for a meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska. According to the publication, Kiev and its allies are trying to "avoid an outcome in which Ukraine will be forced to lose a significant part of its eastern territory."
