- Expectations from the meeting between Trump and Putin on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. What is known
The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska, announced on August 8, will take place this week, on August 15. Read about the reaction of the world community on the eve of the summit of the two leaders in the Izvestia article.
What are the expectations from the meeting on both sides of the Pacific Ocean
On August 10, participants in an interview with Izvestia in Alaska spoke about their positive perception of the future summit. According to local residents, the proximity of Russia and the United States makes the state a good place to hold a meeting. The respondents also expressed disappointment with the anti-Russian sanctions. They added that they want to work with Russia because it is located near Alaska.
In turn, residents of Totma in the Vologda region recalled that their city has historical ties with the current American state: it was there that employee Ivan Kuskov was born, who founded Fort Ross fortress in California in 1812 to supply Alaskans with food.
"Later, he became the right-hand man of the main ruler of the Russian colony in Alaska, Alexander Andreevich Baranov. 35 years ago, the house where Kuskov lived with his American wife after returning from Alaska, California, was restored and opened," said Alexey Novoselov, director of the Totem Museum Association.
US Vice President Jay Dee Vance called the meeting between Putin and Trump a big breakthrough for American diplomacy. He also said that the head of the White House was convinced that the meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska was worth the effort.
At the same time, Rodion Miroshnik, the Russian Foreign Ministry's ambassador-at-large for crimes committed by the Kiev regime, warned of possible provocations and terrorist attacks that Ukraine could stage ahead of the meeting.
"We do not exclude the possibility of using terrorist attacks and provocations to escalate the information agenda around the conflict," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Mikhail Sheremet, a State Duma deputy from Crimea, also called on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to "keep his mouth shut" after his words about refusing to make territorial concessions in negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. He added that Putin and Trump are currently engaged in a dialogue about a new geopolitical world order based on a new system of checks and balances. According to the parliamentarian, Zelensky has no place in these negotiations.
Who else can take part in the summit
The American TV channel CNN learned on the same day that the White House does not rule out that Zelensky may visit Alaska during the meeting between Putin and Trump.
Zelensky was not named as a participant in the Alaska summit to be held on Friday between Trump and Putin. However, the White House does not completely exclude the possibility of Zelensky's participation in some meetings," the publication says.
The US Permanent Representative to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, also allowed Zelensky to participate in the summit. He noted that no decision has been made on this issue yet.
How the European Union is preparing for Putin's visit to Alaska
On the eve of the meeting, the head of the diplomatic service of the European Union (EU), Kaya Kallas, called a meeting of the foreign ministers of the commonwealth countries to discuss future talks between Putin and Trump. The meeting will be held on Monday, August 11. She pointed out that the leaders of Russia and the United States must take into account the interests of Brussels and Kiev during the discussion.
British analyst Alexander Mercuris shared the opinion that neither Europe nor the Ukrainian authorities want the conflict to end. Their main goal will be to disrupt or devalue the negotiations in Alaska.
"Zelensky does not want the conflict to end, at least on the terms that Moscow and Washington can offer him, and in this he has already received support from his British and European friends," he said.
At the same time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the meeting between Putin and Trump should end with a breakthrough in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. The politician also expressed hope for a possible ceasefire and peace talks following the results.
Florian Philippot, leader of the French Patriots party, noted that Europe's call to put pressure on Russia demonstrates the continent's desire to continue the conflict in Ukraine. Accordingly, he commented on the statement against direct peace talks between the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation, signed by European leaders.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called on the EU to support Trump's peace efforts at a meeting with Putin. He clarified that the American president wants to achieve peace, which is why he has scheduled a meeting with the head of the Russian Federation. The Hungarian Prime Minister also stressed that Budapest's interests include the lifting of sanctions, the cessation of killings in the context of the conflict and the resumption of processes in the global economy.
Bloomberg reported that European countries are trying to arrange talks with Trump before he meets with Putin in Alaska. It is noted that such a proposal followed the active diplomatic contacts that took place this weekend.
The countries of the North Baltic Eight (NB8) in a joint statement supported the initiative of the head of the White House on the conflict resolution process. The authors of the document expressed the opinion that the launched process would have to guarantee the "vital" interests of Kiev and Europe. The need for reliable security guarantees was highlighted separately.
Where exactly can the meeting between Putin and Trump take place
Anna Vernaya, head of the Russian Cultural Center in Alaska, told Izvestia that the summit of the heads of Russia and the United States in Alaska could be held in Anchorage. During the visit, Putin could lay a memorial wreath at the Ford Richardson Military Memorial Cemetery, where the remains of Soviet pilots who died in the region are buried.
On the same day, The New York Times (NYT) learned that the US Secret Service had rented a property in Anchorage for an upcoming meeting between the two presidents. It is noted that the White House has not confirmed this information.
