- The political scientist admitted the possibility of India lobbying for exceptions to US sanctions
There is a possibility of India's attempts to lobby for exceptions to US sanctions through diplomatic channels. This was stated to Izvestia on August 5 by Alexander Khazaridi, an expert at the Polylogue Group and a political scientist.
He commented on the statement by US President Donald Trump that Washington would significantly increase duties on India due to imports of Russian oil.
"To mitigate the effects of the duties, New Delhi can accelerate the transition to alternative oil suppliers such as Saudi Arabia or Iraq, as well as increase the use of ruble-rupee settlements with Russia. There may also be an attempt to lobby for exceptions to the sanctions through their diplomatic channels," the expert said.
In addition, the political scientist said that the country has both economic and political tools to respond to the United States. Khazaridi pointed to increased duties on American goods or limited cooperation in other areas, including defense and technology, as possible steps. However, in his opinion, the country's leadership will strive to find a balance between protecting its economic interests and unwillingness to enter into a sharp confrontation with Washington.
In addition, political scientist Alexander Asafov added that Russia is a friendly country for India. He said that if India decides to make any concessions to the United States, the Russian side will seek to find alternative ways to continue active cooperation.
On July 14, Trump announced secondary duties of 100% against countries that buy Russian oil if a peaceful settlement in Ukraine is not reached. On August 4, the Global Times newspaper reported on the refusal of India and Brazil to stop buying oil from Russia, despite threats from the American leader.
On August 5, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Trump's statements, noted that sovereign countries have the right to choose their own partners in economic cooperation, despite the threat of sanctions against them.
