- The US State Department condemned the court's decision on the house arrest of former Brazilian President Bolsonaro.
On August 4, the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. Department of State condemned the decision of a local court to place former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest.
"The United States condemns the decree of [Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexander] de Moraes on Bolsonaro's house arrest and will hold accountable anyone who cooperates with or contributes to sanctioned actions," the agency said in a statement on the social network X.
It is noted that this decision is allegedly the suppression of Brazil's opposition views against democracy. The United States also demands Bolsonaro's right to vote.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Supreme Court of Brazil had decided to place ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who is being investigated for an attempted coup, under house arrest. The former head of state was also banned from using a mobile phone in person or through third parties. In addition, the judge imposed a ban on visiting the ex-president. An exception was made for lawyers and authorized persons.
Bolsonaro's possible arrest was reported on June 12. According to investigators, Bolsonaro knew that the military wanted to prevent the elected leader from coming to power and were ready to make an assassination attempt on him in December 2022. The ex-president denies his guilt.
On November 22, 2024, the Brazilian police accused the ex-president of a coup. He was charged with creating a criminal organization that acted in a coordinated manner to try to keep Bolsonaro in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections.
