A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan. This was announced on August 1 by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

It is specified that the seismic event occurred 108 km from the city of Nemuro in the northeast of the island of Hokkaido with a population of 31 thousand people. A natural cataclysm was recorded at a depth of 10 km. No tsunami threat was reported.

On July 10, NHK reported that two islands in Japan had moved away from each other by almost 10 cm in three days due to seismic activity. It is unknown whether the shifts will lead to a strong earthquake.
