The EC announced the continuation of financing of Ukraine after the new law on NABU
The European Union (EU) countries will not stop providing financial assistance to Ukraine after the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada decided to restore the independence of the country's anti-corruption authorities. This was announced on July 31 by the official representative of the European Commission (EC) Guillaume Mercier.
"I can confirm that there are no such plans as freezing EU funds. At the moment, it is important that Ukraine has independent anti—corruption bodies," he said at a briefing in Brussels. The broadcast was conducted on the EC website.
Mercier noted that the Ukrainian authorities are carrying out the necessary reforms to ensure that the rule of law is respected in the country.
On July 23, the law on limiting the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) entered into force in Ukraine. A day earlier, mass protests had begun in connection with its adoption.
Later, on July 29, Bloomberg reported that the EU plans to reduce the amount of aid to Ukraine by € 1.5 billion due to delayed reforms. On July 31, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a law restoring the independence of anti-corruption bodies.
