- The doctor stated about possible heart problems in the absence of holes on the nails.
At the base of the nails, you can see light semicircular areas — they are called nail holes or lunules. These small areas, especially clearly visible on the thumbs, can be an important indicator of health status. On July 30, Alexandra Fileva, an expert at the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestia about their decrease or complete disappearance.
The holes are formed in the area of active nail growth, where new cells of the nail plate are constantly being updated. Their clear visibility depends on the quality of the blood supply to the nail bed. When negative changes occur in the capillaries of the fingers — for example, narrowing of the vascular lumen or deterioration of their elasticity — this immediately affects the condition of the wells. They may become less pronounced or disappear completely.
"The most common reason for such changes is disorders in the functioning of the cardiovascular system. With arterial hypertension, small vessels are in a state of constant spasm, which significantly impairs blood microcirculation in the fingers. A similar situation can occur with atherosclerosis, when cholesterol deposits reduce the lumen of blood vessels and make their walls more rigid," the specialist notes.
Special attention should be paid to cases when the holes disappear not on one, but on several fingers at once — this may indicate systemic problems with blood circulation. Such changes sometimes appear earlier than other symptoms of cardiovascular diseases, which makes them a valuable diagnostic feature.
"However, it is important to understand that the absence of holes in itself is not a diagnosis. This is just a reason to pay attention to your health and, possibly, check the pressure and condition of the heart and blood vessels," explains the doctor.
Situations are considered alarming when nail changes are accompanied by other symptoms: a frequent feeling of cold in the hands, tingling or numbness of the fingers, discoloration of the nail plates or their increased fragility.
Nails are a kind of mirror of our health. Their condition may change long before the appearance of obvious symptoms of various diseases. Therefore, it is important to periodically inspect your nails and consult a doctor for any persistent changes.
"To maintain vascular health, it is important to follow simple rules. Control blood pressure, maintain normal cholesterol levels, stop smoking and regularly give the body moderate physical activity," the expert concludes.
Nutritionist Zainudin Zainudinov pointed out on July 15 that failure to follow proper nutrition in the summer can lead to an exacerbation of cardiovascular diseases, as well as cause fluctuations in blood pressure. Zainudinov added that the risk of food poisoning increases in the heat due to possible violations of food storage conditions.
