Canada expressed hope for a trade deal with the United States before August 1.
The Canadian government hopes to conclude a new trade agreement with the administration of US President Donald Trump by August 1 this year. This was reported by the CTV channel with reference to the Canadian Minister of Interdepartmental Affairs Dominique Leblanc.
"Canadians expect that we will take the necessary time to conclude the best possible deal in the interests of Canadian workers," he is quoted in the article.
According to him, Ottawa will be able to accept the deal only after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney considers the deal the best that the country can conclude in the interests of local workers and the economy.
In addition, Leblanc pointed to the "difficult negotiation process" between Canada and the United States. It is noted that the minister plans to visit Washington this week.
Earlier, on June 27, the US president announced the termination of trade negotiations with Canada due to the introduction of a tax on digital services of American technology companies. Later, on July 11, Trump ordered the imposition of trade duties of 35% on goods imported from Canada. The tariffs will take effect on August 1.
Before that, on April 26, Carney highlighted the betrayal of Canada by Trump due to the outbreak of a trade war that is destroying the global economy. The Canadian prime minister noted that the country's residents consider the trade standoff to be a bad idea, but they are ready to respond to it.
