Every fourth Saturday in July, Russia celebrates Trade Worker's Day, a professional holiday for sellers, consultants, cashiers, merchandisers, supervisors, and other professionals who help people meet the need for goods and services. In 2025, it falls on July 26. Izvestia tells about the history of the celebration, as well as shares greetings and postcards for trade workers.

Trade Worker's Day — the history of the holiday

The holiday of trade workers appeared in our country in 1966. It was established by order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR to emphasize the merits of specialists in this field. The last Sunday of July was chosen as the date for it.

In 1988, it was decided to combine the Day of Trade Workers and the Day of Housing and Communal Services Workers. It began to be celebrated on the third Sunday in March. However, many sellers and other trade industry professionals continued to celebrate in the summer out of habit.

Finally, in 2013, the celebrations were divided again. By decree of the President of Russia, the date of the Day of Housing and Communal Services Workers remained unchanged, and the Day of Trade Workers was postponed to the fourth Saturday of July.

Today, trade is one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the Russian economy, providing up to 13% of the country's GDP. About 13 million Russians are engaged in the provision of goods and services, and the number of organizations engaged in retail trade has reached 1.5 million as of 2024.

In Soviet times, the responsibilities of sellers were determined at the level of the Ministry of Trade. The person behind the counter had to arrange the goods in the showcase, advise customers, keep the sales area clean, and release the goods according to the receipt. The law also required sellers to be polite to customers and constantly improve their skills.

Modern trade workers follow not only the letter of the law, but also the internal regulations of the organization, as well as job descriptions. In addition, the trade sector provides a wide variety of specialties: sellers, cashiers, commodity specialists, point managers, promoters, supervisors, logisticians, sales representatives, marketers, international trade specialists, etc.

Traditions of Trade Worker's Day

Trade Worker's Day traditionally honors the best specialists in the industry. In the USSR, employees were awarded honorary badges "Excellent worker of Soviet trade." In Russia, until 2010, there was the title of Honored Trade Worker of the Russian Federation, which was awarded on a holiday. Specialists with at least 15 years of trading experience could apply for it.

Today, in honor of the holiday, managers present prizes, memorable gifts and certificates of appreciation to trade workers. Corporate parties, feasts and team building events are also organized for the culprits of the celebration. It is not uncommon for trade workers to be congratulated by officials, including regional heads.
