Watermelon peels can become a valuable resource for gardeners and gardeners. Irina Lyalina, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, shared with Izvestia on July 24 unexpected ways of using watermelon peels, which are usually sent to the trash.

"Watermelon rind is a real storehouse of useful substances. They contain phosphorus and potassium, which have a beneficial effect on the soil and increase yields," says Lyalina.

The expert recommends adding the peel to the compost or using it when creating "warm" beds, be sure to water and mix it to speed up the roasting process.

Crushed watermelon rind will be a particularly effective top dressing for currant and raspberry bushes if applied in autumn. Another useful life hack is the creation of slug traps. It is enough to spread out large pieces of peel overnight, and in the morning collect the pests that will spread to the aroma.

Lyalina also offers non-standard options for using crusts, for example, as feed for farm animals (cows, goats, pigs) if the peel has not had time to sour. In addition, you can make original flower pots after removing the pulp and drying.

"Don't rush to throw away the watermelon rind. If used correctly, they can bring tangible benefits both in the garden and in everyday life," Lyalina insists.

The specialist reminds that even such simple solutions help to reduce the amount of organic waste and increase the efficiency of household management.

On May 25, Marina Tatarenko, a biologist at the Department of Teaching Methods of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Enlightenment, told Izvestia that tea and coffee residues as fertilizers do not benefit home flowers, and an overabundance of ash can cause more harm.
