- The Russian Ambassador pointed to the minimal presence of the Russian Armed Forces in Transnistria
Russia has minimized its military presence in the unrecognized Transnistrian region, where it conducts a peacekeeping operation and guards ammunition depots. Oleg Ozerov, the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, said this in an interview with TASS on July 19.
"All these years, the Russian Federation, in accordance with its decisions, has been pursuing a policy of reducing its military presence on the left bank of the Dniester. It has been constantly decreasing and is now minimized," Ozerov said.
According to him, almost all heavy weapons have been removed from the region. In addition, the diplomat refuted statements by Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan allegedly about Russia's plans to increase the contingent of the Russian military in the unrecognized Transnistrian region by 10,000 people.
"This, of course, cannot be considered anything but an anecdote — references to Gogol's hero Khlestakov with his thousands of couriers involuntarily arise," Ozerov noted.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 17 that the European Union (EU) and NATO were forcibly militarizing Moldova. According to Zakharova, Chisinau assured of its commitment to the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Transnistria, "however, it does not follow its position."
