The dermatovenerologist spoke about the phenomenon of a cortisol face
The term "cortisol face" describes the characteristic skin changes caused by chronic stress and elevated levels of the hormone cortisol. Natalia Mikhailova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, dermatovenerologist, creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia about this phenomenon on July 4.
"Constant stress, lack of sleep and anxiety trigger a chain of destructive processes: microcirculation deteriorates, skin immunity decreases, sebum production increases, and the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid is inhibited. As a result, the skin loses elasticity, becomes dull and prone to inflammation," explains the expert.
Changes in the middle and lower third of the face are especially noticeable: "stress" edema appears, the oval sagges, and the nasolabial folds deepen. According to the expert, even young people show signs of premature aging, and often the root cause is not age, but chronic stress.
The specialist emphasizes that stress worsens the course of skin diseases such as acne, rosacea, and atopic dermatitis. Modern research confirms the link between cortisol levels and inflammatory processes in the skin.
A comprehensive approach is needed to restore the skin. Among the non-medicinal methods, the doctor recommends normalization of sleep, breathing practices, physical activity and psychotherapy. However, professional cosmetology plays a key role.
"Injection techniques with Russian preparations based on hyaluronic acid, amino acids and peptides are particularly effective. They are not inferior to their foreign counterparts, but they are better adapted for our patients," Mikhailova said.
Bioreparation and biorevitalization courses help restore the skin barrier, improve microcirculation and stimulate collagen production.
"The skin is the organ that is the first to reflect internal overload. It is impossible to maintain her health in conditions of chronic stress without an integrated approach," the specialist concluded.
Earlier, on April 16, Mikhailova told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warm season — foams, gels or mousses with the addition of acids or enzymes.
