Import of new passenger cars in Russia decreased four times
In May 2025, 17.8 thousand new passenger cars were imported to Russia. This is 4 times (-74.2%) less than in May last year, when imports amounted to 68.9 thousand cars. Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, announced this in his Telegram channel on June 10.
The analyst attributed a significant reduction in imports to the development of local assembly of Chinese cars and a strong overstocking of Russian distributors and dealers. Demand is still significantly lower than supply, he said.
The share of imports through alternative channels in the total volume of imports in May was 41% (7.3 thousand passenger cars). At the same time, official shipments amounted to only about 10.5 thousand units.
Changan (38%), Haval (11%) and GAC (8%) became the leaders among official suppliers. The most popular brands in alternative imports were Toyota (15%), BMW (9%), Geely (9%) and Lixiang (8%).
The expert also estimated that China accounts for more than 70% of new passenger car imports. Other import destinations include Kyrgyzstan (9%), South Korea (7%) and Belarus (5%).
Earlier in the day, it was reported that by the end of May in Russia, the average cost of a used car of a foreign brand, excluding brands from China, decreased by almost 20 thousand rubles compared to April and amounted to 2.3 million rubles. The decrease occurred against the background of an increase in the volume of supply in the segment of used cars no older than 15 years.
