Xi Jinping advised the United States to be more careful with the Taiwan issue
Washington should take a more cautious approach to the Taiwan issue so that it does not lead to a dangerous conflict between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the United States. This was announced on June 5 by Chinese President Xi Jinping during telephone talks with American leader Donald Trump.
"The United States should approach the Taiwan issue cautiously in order to prevent extremely small separatist elements advocating for "Taiwan independence" from dragging China and the United States into a dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation," China Central Television (CCTV) quoted him as saying.
Trump, in turn, noted that the United States will continue to pursue a one-China policy. According to the American leader, relations between Washington and Beijing are very important, CCTV notes.
The Chinese leader also noted that Washington and Beijing should strengthen cooperation in trade relations, military and diplomatic activities. Thus, it is better to promote consensus and reduce misunderstandings in the policies of the two countries, Xi Jinping believes.
Earlier on June 5, the Xinhua news agency reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping had held telephone talks with his American counterpart. The agency did not provide details of the conversation. The day before, Trump declared his sympathy for Xi Jinping. The American leader noted that he likes the leader of China and always has been.
Prior to that, on May 15, Chris Pratt, the candidate for the post of Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, said that the United States would continue to support Taiwan and had the opportunity to strengthen assistance in various areas. According to Pratt, Taiwan allegedly faces threats from China, while being the most important partner of the United States in the region. On April 3, the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan announced the strengthening of cooperation with the United States.
