- Polish Air Force scrambled to intercept Russian Su-24 over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea
Fighter jets of the Polish Air Force (VVS), based at an air base in Lithuania, were scrambled by order of the Operational Command of NATO Forces in Europe to intercept a Russian Su-24 aircraft that was over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh told reporters on May 23.
"Last night, the Operational Command of NATO forces in Europe ordered a Polish pair of fighter jets on duty to intercept a Russian Su-24 aircraft," Kosinyak-Kamysh said at a press conference broadcast live by TVP Info.
According to the minister, the Russian bomber allegedly "performed dangerous maneuvers."
It is reported that Polish fighter jets took off from a base in Siauliai, Lithuania, to escort the Russian aircraft.
On May 22, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a briefing at the Naval Operations Center in Gdynia that the Baltic Sea, like Poland's eastern border, could become a place of constant confrontation. The politician noted that the Polish army is watching the events.
