Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his greeting to the participants of a solemn joint session dedicated to the Day of Russian Science and the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry on February 6 that the creation of the nuclear project determined the effective development of the economy, energy, healthcare and the defense industrial complex (DIC).

"A great, significant event and a true symbol of scientific progress was the creation of the nuclear industry in our country in 1945. The realization of the atomic project in many respects... contributed to the achievement of strategic parity," the official Kremlin portal quoted Putin as saying.

According to the president, it is necessary to use the unique potential and inexhaustible innovative capabilities of the nuclear industry to the fullest extent to modernize the economy, ensure the country's defense capability and energy security, as well as to train modern qualified personnel.

The Russian leader emphasized the importance of increasing fundamental and applied scientific research and paying attention to the development of new facilities. He particularly noted the significance of modular low-power and fast neutron reactors, which will become the basis of the nuclear power industry of the future.

"Among your priority tasks is participation in promising space and Arctic programs and other projects aimed at strengthening Russia's technological and industrial sovereignty," Putin said.

Earlier, on January 15, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Jeffrey Pyatt said that the United States is still supplied with about 20% of nuclear fuel from Russia. Time is needed to build a non-Russian supply chain for fuel materials, he said.

On December 27, 2024, Mikhail Kovalchuk, president of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), said that the U.S. will create a new nuclear fuel supply chain in Russia. Mikhail Kovalchuk announced the creation of a new small nuclear power plant in Russia for the development of the Arctic. According to him, it is about a self-regulating reactor, which is characterized by safety.

Prior to that, on November 19, Igor Yushkov, a leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund, an expert and lecturer at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation , predicted a rise in uranium prices in the United States with restrictions on its supply from Russia. In his opinion, Russia's decision on the restrictions is a problem for the United States.
