- Media has learned of a court blocking Trump's executive order limiting citizenship eligibility
In Washington, a judge has temporarily blocked US President Donald Trump's executive order to abolish birthright citizenship. This was reported by Reuters on January 23.
"A federal judge in Seattle on Thursday blocked President Donald Trump's administration's order to enact an executive order restricting the right to automatic birthright citizenship in the United States, calling it "blatantly unconstitutional," the publication said.
It is noted that the judge made the decision at the insistence of four states, led by Democrats, after a 25-minute dispute between lawyers for the state of Washington and the Department of Justice.
According to the petitioners, Trump's executive order is a violation of the right enshrined in the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, according to which anyone born in the United States is a citizen.
The American leader, in an executive order he signed immediately after his inauguration, instructed that automatic citizenship should be denied to children born in the United States if at least one parent is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
Prior to that, on the same day, it was reported that Democratic prosecutors in four states will ask a federal judge in Seattle to prevent the Trump administration from enforcing the executive order restricting the right to automatic U.S. birthright citizenship.
Earlier, on January 21, it was reported that a coalition of at least 18 US states filed a lawsuit against the President's decision to limit the granting of American citizenship by birthright. It was specified that another group of states, which included Arizona and Washington, filed another separate lawsuit against the decision signed by Trump.
On the same day, media outlets pointed out Trump's violation of the US Constitution in the immigrant law. The NYT reported that Trump cannot revoke birthright citizenship on his own. Since the president of the country does not have the power to amend the Constitution on his own, any executive order limiting or eliminating birthright citizenship would be challenged in court as a violation of the 14th Amendment.
